چکیده

The nature of the 5 − 12 s “anomalous” X-ray pulsars (AXPs) remains a mystery. Among the models that have been proposed to explain the properties of AXPs, the most likely ones are: (1) isolated accreting neutron stars evolved from the Thorne-Żytkow objects (TŻOs ) due to complete spiral-in during the common envelope (CE) evolution of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), and (2) magnetars, which are neutron stars with ultra-high (∼ 1014− 10 G) surface magnetic fields. We have critically examined the predicted change of neutron star’s spin in the accretion model, and found that it is unable to account for the steady spin-down observed in AXPs. A simple analysis also shows that any accretion disk around an isolated neutron star has extremely limited lifetime. A more promising explanation for such objects is the magnetar model. An Accretion Model for Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars

We present a model for the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) in which the emission is powered by accretion from a fossil disk, established from matter falling back onto the neutron star following its birth. The time-dependent accretion drives the neutron star towards a “tracking” solution in which the rotation period of the star increases slowly, in tandem with the declining accretion rate. For ap...

The Spin Period, Luminosity and Age Distributions of Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars

We consider the accretion model for anomalous X-ray pulsars proposed recently by Chatterjee, Hernquist and Narayan, in which the emission is powered by accretion from a fossil disk formed by the fallback of material from a supernova explosion. We demonstrate that this model is able to account for the spin period, luminosity and age distributions of the observed population of AXPs for reasonable...

Spectral properties of anomalous X-ray pulsars

In this paper, the spectra of the persistent emission from anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and their variation with spin-down rate Ω̇ is considered. Firstly, based on an accretion-powered model, the influences of both magnetic field and mass accretion rate on the spectra properties of AXPs are addressed. Subsequently, the relation between the spectral property of AXPs and mass accretion rate Ṁ is...

Millisecond Pulsars in X-Ray Binaries

Despite considerable evidence verifying that millisecond pulsars are spun up through sustained accretion in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), it has proven surprisingly difficult to actually detect millisecond X-ray pulsars in LMXBs. There are only 5 accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars known among more than 80 LMXBs containing neutron stars, but there are another 11 “nuclear-powered” mil...

The strongest cosmic magnets: Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars

Two classes of X-ray pulsars, the Anomalous X–ray Pulsars and the Soft Gamma–ray Repeaters, have been recognized in the last decade as the most promising candidates for being magnetars: isolated neutron stars powered by magnetic energy. I review the observational properties of these objects, focussing on the most recent results, and their interpretation in the magnetar model. Alternative explan...
